A Solid Start: Tie Beams and Cane Sticks Ensure Structural Integrity

As work progresses on the surgery center, we have reached a critical phase: constructing the concrete floor using a combination of tie beams and cane stick supports. This method, widely used in West African construction, blends strength and efficiency to create a stable, long-lasting structure.

Since future plans include adding a second floor to the surgery center, this construction method provides durability and is also scalable. The first level will be fully functional indefinitely, allowing the facility to serve the community while funding is secured for future expansion.

The tie beams serve as horizontal supports, reinforcing the building’s framework. Installed above the walls before the concrete slab is poured, these beams help distribute weight evenly, ensuring that the load from the slab and any future upper floors is effectively transferred to the foundation. To support the concrete slab during pouring and curing, locally sourced cane sticks are arranged vertically. These temporary supports hold the formwork in place, allowing the concrete to set properly.  Once the concrete cures—typically after 28 days—the cane sticks are carefully removed, leaving behind a solid, reinforced floor system.

With each phase of construction, we move closer to completing a facility that will serve the community for generations. Stay tuned as we continue this legacy project!
