On Monday, December 12, we traveled around the peninsula when returning from Freetown to Lungi. Between Port Loko and Lungi, we stopped to view a new government hospital in Lokomasama Chiefdom, just over 6 miles from our family land. We greeted the construction manager on site, and he provided a tour of the new facility. The construction of the hospital has just been completed, and it does not yet have any furnishings in the interior rooms. The hospital will have a reception area, exam rooms, conference room, labor/delivery rooms, a surgery center, pharmacy, and laboratory. Solar panels and battery have been installed as well as a water well and tank. The clinic is currently being operated out of a small house, which will be converted to staff quarters when equipment is moved into the hospital. We spoke with several of the construction workers on site. They indicated the construction spanned the past five years, due to delays in funding for materials.
